Today I will introduce the Literature Circle process to you. After giving you the calendar/schedule, I will explain all of the Lit Circle roles and assign a short story for you to read. Then you will practice the discussion tasks.

Wednesday

Today you will peruse all of the book choices and write your top two preferences on an index card. I will use these to create the Lit Circles. Your first group meeting is tomorrow.

Thursday

Today you will meet in your groups to divide the reading into 6 sections and select your first role assignments. If there is time, you may begin reading the first section.

Cooperative groups will present their projects as mini-lessons on their assigned topics. All students are responsible for the information presented by the groups. For homework you must answer five discussion questions.

Whole-class discussion, extending what we have learned about Greek myths and legends. What do they have to do with our beliefs today?

Read about the Titans and Olympian gods and goddesses. Finish reading the packet at home and answer the following question: What values can we infer prevailed in ancient Greek society, and how do they differ from those that prevail in our society?

Wednesday

You will view a teacher demonstration of a "lesson" on an important figure from ancient Greek myth or legend. The sample lesson in on Athena. Then you will learn what your assigned "lesson" topic is and who your group members are for the ancient Greece project. Meet with your members briefly to discuss the division of the workload.

Thursday and Friday

We will go to the library to conduct research on the ancient Greece projects.

In the computer lab each student will create a Power Point vocabulary lesson using words with Greek or Latin roots.

Wednesday and Thursday

The students will present their vocabulary lessons to the class and take notes while others are giving their presentations. There will be a take-home vocabulary quiz on these words today.

Friday

After turning in their vocabulary take-home quiz, the students will cooperatively write dialogue that contains the new vocabulary.

Discuss the plot in Romeo and Juliet and compare the movement of events to the tipping of dominoes. Which domino was missing in Friar Lawrence's plan? How was a new sequence of events triggered? Discuss who is to blame and go over the essay/wanted poster assignment. View the 1968 movie version of Romeo and Juliet from the middle of Act III to the beginning of Act IV.

Tuesday

Discuss changing mindsets in Romeo and Juliet. What type of love do we see at the beginning of the play? What type of love do we see at the end? View the 1968 movie version from Act IV to the end.

Wednesday

This is a work period for students to write essays and create posters. They are due tomorrow.

Thursday and Friday

Students will present essays and posters to the class.
